For over six decades, Peter L. Bilan has approached sculpture as an interplay between formal discipline and spontaneous narrative exploration. Grounded in a lifelong formalist practice—from early carved, cast or bent-wood pieces to recent collage assemblages, Bilan fuses meticulous craftsmanship with wood, found objects, mixed-media collage, and precise spatial logic. In this body of work, a wide variety of forms serve as visual metaphors for ascendance toward the unreachable and the complex passages through aspects of the human journey. These assembled works balance tactile, playful construction with sharp psychological, social, and political commentary. By bridging structural precision with symbolic depth, Bilan transforms wood and found materials into elegant spatial puzzles. He invites viewers to step into the gallery, examine their own preconceptions, and engage with the continuing arc of a life spent making art.
